Why Baker Mayfield Should Win The Heisman

I am an Oklahoma alumnus and fan, but I am also a math teacher, so we are going to put the "OU fan" aside and look at this objectively and logically. I am going to do my very best to explain why Baker Mayfield should win the Heisman in a couple of weeks. This is specifically directed towards all of the Heisman voters out there.

These days, the culture of college football, whether it's the fan, the sports commentator, or sports journalist, is salivating and getting all googly-eyed over 4-star and 5-star recruits. So let's take a look at the Heisman candidates with regard to their status coming out of high school. The information that I'll be looking at comes from Rivals.com and the Heisman Expert Poll from ESPN.

Derrick Henry - 4-star recruit in the class of 2013
Position rank (5), National rank (36), State rank (6)
Received 16 scholarship offers. Chose Alabama.

Deshaun Watson - 5-star recruit in the class of 2014
Position rank (1), National rank (31), State rank (2)
Received 13 scholarship offers. Chose Clemson.

Christian McCaffrey - 4-star recruit in the class of 2014
Position rank (3), National rank (77), State rank (1)
Received 22 scholarship offers. Chose Stanford.

Dalvin Cook - 5-star recruit in the class of 2014
Position rank (2), National rank (18), State rank (3)
Received 9 scholarship offers. Chose Florida State.

Baker Mayfield - 3-star recruit in the class of 2013
Position rank (NR), National rank (NR), State rank (NR)
Received 3 scholarship offers. Chose none of them.

You can't really play the numbers game because it's hard to compare the on-field production of each of these guys. You can't really look at team record because clearly you've got guys on teams with 2 losses above a guy on a team with 1 loss. Also, RG3 won the Heisman when Baylor had 3 losses. The definitive thing that we CAN look at and must truly consider is the Heisman Trust Mission Statement. What I want to look at is the first two sentences, more specifically the second sentence.

"The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work."

Based on the second sentence, every college football player should get the Heisman because it's not easy playing for an FBS team. Just look at the work that each guy has to put in each day during summer "two-a-days" and early morning workouts and afternoon practices and film study and, oh yeah, GOING TO CLASS!

The five guys listed above all have great ability. They all have diligence, perseverance, and hard work. HOWEVER, Baker Mayfield has so much more diligence, perseverance, and hard work than the other guys. This is evident in what he did at Texas Tech and what he did at Oklahoma. HE WALKED ON. Walk-ons are not looked at with the same reverence as 4-star and 5-star recruits. They are seen almost as automatic bench-warmers. They decide to commit to playing a sport that, in all likelihood, they have no chance of getting much playing time. Baker Mayfield walked on at two FBS, Power 5 Conference schools and WON the starting job at Quarterback. This is not a normal thing that happens. This is something that is "once in a blue moon." Baker EPITOMIZES diligence, perseverance, and hard work. He should be the 2015 Heisman winner.

Something New...Six Degrees Style

So I am trying something new. I recently got the idea of playing my "Kevin Bacon Game" via this blog.  How do I determine which actors/actresses to link, you ask? I pick two people who have the same birthday the day of the post. This will be according to IMDB. After I give the linking from my brain, I will then post what the Oracle of Bacon says. So without any further ado, here goes...
